Spotlight: uMentor is shaping the way that networking happens within our communities

uMentor, our career development branch, is looking to change the way that networking happens within our communities. Every week, the team hosts a career development podcast, bringing on a professional to answer questions about their experience and help mentor students in their career journeys. Now, uMentor has launched a new effort to create a global Shi’a professional directory! Joining the directory will be an opt-in option for all users creating a new Umoja account. It’ll connect professionals to young people within our communities. Want to be a part of the professional directory? Opt in to it when you create your Umoja account, or sign in to your existing account and opt in in your account settings! The Academy: Paving the Way for our Next Generation!

We like to call The Academy the heartbeat of the organization. Its role in paving the way for the future of Umoja is instrumental. The Academy is where we train the next generation of Umojis by developing soccer skills using our hand-picked coaches to teach our wide array of age categories. By partnering with the best of coaches, facilities and program offering, we can deliver much more than skills to kill a soccer ball. At the Academy, we are building a bigger family by enabling old relationships rekindle, new ones get formed and lay the foundations for the future generations – all on the backdrop of a soccer field. The Academy is currently available in New York, Orlando, Toronto, New Jersey, Allentown, and Chicago. #CROWNJEWEL

Check out Umoja Care’s Adopt-a-Grandparent Program!

Umoja means “unity,” and Umoja Care’s new Adopt-a-Grandparent program provides an opportunity for youth and seniors to partner up in the spirit of friendship, mutual support, and unity! The program pairs youth (ages 7-21) with a senior in our community, and gives them the opportunity to connect and form intergenerational bonds. What are the requirements to apply? Simple – None. As long as you as a youth want to connect with an elderly, ask how they are, learn something about them – we’d love to have you participate! For seniors who want to connect with youth, we think this program is the perfect opportunity, especially amid the isolation caused by the current situation. All participants in this program are required to apply. Each youth will be paired with a grandparent (senior) from a community after an interview process. UmojaCare will provide monthly themes and discussion starters to the youth to help in their discussion with the grandparent. The youth volunteer will summarize their discussion and have the option to create a short biography for their adopted grandparent – their lifelong friend. The program will span over a 12-month period, but we hope that the relationships will last forever. On our weekly uMentor talk show, we recently featured two program participants, Br. Maisum Walli and adopted “grandparent” Sr. Sakina Naqvi! They talked about their experience with the program, and it’s a great resource for those looking to learn more.
